Essay by Dermot Bannon: ‘Why We Need to Talk Architecture’

When we think of an architect who has inspired us and touched our daily lives – as we try to make our homes work better for us – Dermot Bannon comes instantly to mind. Writing in the RIAI Annual Review, Dermot’s essay ‘Why We Need to Talk Architecture’ is making a passionate plea as to why we all need to demand better quality for our homes, work places, schools, hospitals and public realm, resulting in a better built environment for everyone. Other essay topics include: ‘Free Market: The small town market place, Venice and beyond’ by Miriam Delaney MRIAI; ‘Designing Healthcare for Ageing Populations’ by Clare White MRIAI and ‘A Century of Housing in Dublin and why we need new Models’ by James Pike FRIAI.

Award-winning Irish Architecture around the globe and in Ireland

A strong theme of this edition is the continued success of Irish architects delivering landmark projects abroad. Our cover project features the Palestinian Museum in Ramallah by heneghen peng architects, which recently shared the 2019 prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Closer to home, O’Donnell + Tuomey’s Central European University (CEU) in Budapest demonstrates the great skill of Irish architects in creating works of outstanding quality in complex urban settings. One of the great global successes of Irish architecture was the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, which was under the inspired curatorship of Yvonne Farrell (FRIAI) and Shelley McNamara (FRIAI), founders of Dublin-based Grafton Architects. The Biennale coverage includes a comprehensive history of Irish contributions to world’s biggest architecture showcase by Shane O’Toole Hon FRIAI and an insightful interview with Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara.
